Can you wear makeup to school? Short answer: it depends on your school.
There’s no UK-wide law that says you can or can’t wear makeup in lessons. In England, the government’s guidance on school appearance is advice, not law. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland do their own thing too. So each school writes its own rules on makeup, nail varnish and jewellery.
Can you wear makeup to school? Your school decides
The rules usually live in the uniform policy or the behaviour policy. Schools can sanction pupils who break appearance rules, so it’s worth knowing yours.
What do schools usually say?
It varies a lot.
- Primary schools: often no makeup or nail varnish, apart from special events like a school disco.
- Secondary schools: some ban it. Some allow subtle, natural-looking makeup.
- Sixth form: often more relaxed, but not always.
So don’t go off what your mate’s school does. Check your own.
How to find out
- Search your school website for the uniform or behaviour policy.
- Check your planner or student handbook.
- Ask your form tutor or head of year. It’s a normal question. Nobody will think you’re being dramatic.
If makeup is allowed, keep it low-key
“Natural” usually means less, not none. Think:
- Tinted moisturiser or a light SPF
- Brow gel
- One coat of mascara
- Tinted lip balm
That’s about 10 minutes. We’ve got a full guide: the perfect 10-minute makeup routine before school.
If makeup is banned
Don’t try to sneak it in. Getting told off isn’t worth it. Instead:
- Keep your skincare on point. Clear skin needs less cover-up.
- Save the full glam for weekends, parties and the school disco.
- Ask if clear lip balm and SPF are okay before you wear them.
Think the rule is unfair?
Government guidance says school policies should be fair and reasonable, and schools should consult parents and pupils when they set them. So you’ve got a voice. Raise it politely through your school council, or ask a parent or carer to email the school. A calm, sensible case works better than complaining in the corridor.
Got a medical reason?
If you use makeup to cover something like a skin condition or scarring, speak to your school privately. They can often work something out.
The bottom line? Know your school’s rules, keep it simple, and save the bold stuff for after the bell.
